Holy Bible (Old and New Testaments), bound in leather with gilt edges, in English, 1 volume, published circa 1825 by Clarendon Press (J. Cooke and S. Collingwood) sold by E. Gardner, Oxford, 252 pages, 14 cm by 8 cm, fair condition.
Description from the seller
An attractive and unusual early 19th-century copy of the Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments, printed at the Clarendon Press, Oxford, and sold at the Oxford Bible Warehouse, Paternoster Row, London. The New Testament title page indicates a stereotype edition printed by J. Cooke and S. Collingwood, Printers to the University, dating the volume to circa 1825.
The Bible is bound in a small leather binding with gilt page edges. The rear cover features a distinctive rectangular opening with surrounding impressions, suggesting the volume may once have been fitted with a strap, clasp, or carrying attachment. Together with the evident signs of use, this gives the book a strong sense of historical ownership and devotional practice.
The volume contains both Old and New Testaments, though the original Old Testament title page appears to be missing. At the rear of the book are handwritten annotations, possibly financial notes or records made by a previous owner.
Condition: Fair. Binding worn with a loose spine and edge wear, and some preliminary leaves missing. Pages show foxing, age toning, and signs of use throughout. A characterful early 19th-century Oxford Bible with clear evidence of historical use.
