Andy Warhol (Pittsburgh, 6 augustus 1928 – New York, 22 februari 1987) was een Amerikaans kunstenaar, filmregisseur en auteur. Warhol werkte tevens als muziekproducent en acteur. Vanuit zijn achtergrond en ervaring in de toegepaste kunst was Warhol een van de protagonisten van de popart in de Verenigde Staten in de jaren 50 en 60 van de 20e eeuw. Warhol wordt ook wel the silver prince of the pop genoemd.
Warhol is vooral beroemd om zijn 'vlakke' en contrastrijke schilderijen en zeefdrukken van verpakte producten en alledaagse objecten zoals Campbell's-soepblikken, bloemen en de banaan op de cover van het album The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967), alsook voor zijn gestileerde portretten van 20e-eeuwse beroemdheden als Marilyn Monroe, Grace Jones, Elvis Presley, Judy Garland, en Elizabeth Taylor.

De foto die Warhol selecteerde was een publiciteitsfoto voor de film 'Niagara' uit 1953, waarin Monroe had gespeeld. Op basis van die foto creëerde hij talloze Monroe-kunstwerken, inclusief “Marilyn Diptych”, dat nu gezien wordt als een van de meest invloedrijke moderne kunstwerken. In plaats van een tekening of schilderij te maken, gebruikte Warhol een foto waarvan hij wist dat bijna iedereen hem zou herkennen. Maar waarom Monroe? Marilyn belichaamde beroemdheid en de notie van het zijn van een 'sekssymbool'. Het afbeelden van beroemdheden werd karakteristiek voor de popart-beweging in de jaren 1960: het was een ironisch commentaar op de obsessie van de massamedia met de celebrity-cultuur.

De Stichting Beeldrecht was een Nederlandse collectieve beheersorganisatie die voor de bij haar aangesloten beeldend kunstenaars en architecten het beeldrecht inde. Op 1 januari 2008 is Stichting Beeldrecht opgegaan in Stichting Pictoright.
