When they arrived, they demanded 5 pesetas per kilo of cotton harvested. When the landowners refused to pay them, the children went on strike and walked the long way back. The next day they received their wages."

Condition:
Book inside and outside fresh and clean with no marks and with no foxing. Dustjacket almost complete and still very impressive (hard to find in any condition); small missing part at the top of the dustjacket, no other missing parts or remarkable defects; normal trace of use. Overall fine condition.

Great GDR/DDR photobook - with the extrem scarce original dustjacket. 

Jeanne Stern (1908-1998) was a translator and screenwriter. 
Kurt Stern (1907-1989) was a German journalist, communist, writer, screenwriter and translator. He was a political commissar in the Spanish Civil War. After 1949, he lived in the GDR, where he was friends with Johannes R. Becher, Anna Seghers and Christa Wolf.
Their documentary film "unruly spain" was released in 1962.
Jeanne and Kurt Stern's library is now in the library of the Akademie der Künste Berlin.
