Sestante "Spenser" del 1930 Inghilterra
Strumento ottico per la misurazione dell'altezza degli astri sull'orizzonte, usato soprattutto su navi e imbarcazioni nella navigazione astronomica, ovvero per rilievi topografici e idrografici, come un goniometro in grado di misurare gli angoli tra le visuali di oggetti lontani visti da uno stesso punto di osservazione. Misurando l'altezza delle stelle, il sestante permette ai marinai di calcolare la loro posizione.

Inventato attorno al 1730, il sestante ha sostituito l'antichissimo astrolabio come strumento principale per consentire ai naviganti di conoscere la propria posizione sul mare.
