Three parts in one volume, folio (420 x 280); 522, [2], 523-684 pp. contemporary dark calf,  decorated  gilt spine,  gauffered  gilt edges, three title pages, the first within ornamental frame, text entirely printed in red and black, several pages of  notated music, densely illustrated with 158 fine half-page (195 x 138) engraved illustrations, extremely fine and large copy ,with the engravings neatly printed on crisp paper. A magnificent book and a great addition to any important collector’s library.

The pontifical, a liturgical book, contains the rites and ceremonies usually performed by bishops of the Roman Rite. The earliest pontificals date from the late ninth century. A standard version for the use of the entire Roman Rite, under the title Pontificale Romanum was published under Pope Clement VIII  in 1595-96 and reprinted with many variations until 1962. The three parts contain respectively the liturgical norms for the Ordination and Blessing of people, those for the blessing of things and the description of the most important episcopal functions, connected to the liturgical year. The beautiful illustrations have been realized from drawing by the Italian painter and engraver Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630), one of the most influential artist of his time.
