Burmese box, designed to hold buddhist manuscripts, probably in a temple.  The outside is decorated in gold. The top shows the Buddha in a traditional pavilion in the forest, preaching to his followers.  The front depicts four cherub-like creatures (possibly indicating  Western influence and manufacture during the colonial period), in a forest. The rear shows birds in a forest. The inside is painted a traditional red. The wood is probably teak (hardwood helped to preserve valuable manuscripts from insects, etc), hence the weight of 2.9kg. Four circular marks on the base indicate that the box was originlally displayed on a stand.
Acquired in Bangkok around 2000.
