This decoration, established by the Department of Defense on June 25, 1963, is awarded by the office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and other Department of Defense agencies or joint activities reporting through the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Any member of the Armed Forces who distinguishes himself by meritorious achievement or service while serving in any specified activity after Jan. 1, 1965, is eligible for this award. However, it will not be awarded for any period of service for which any of the Commendation Medals of the branches of the Armed Forces are given.

The Commendation Medal is a United States military decoration awarded for sustained acts of heroism or meritorious service. Each branch of the United States Armed Forces issues its own version of the Commendation Medal, with a fifth version for joint military service actions under the Department of Defense.

Joint Service Commendation Medal (deutsch Gemeinschaftsdienst-Anerkennungsmedaille) ist eine Commendation Medal der Streitkräfte der Vereinigten Staaten, die für nachhaltige militärische Verdienste im direkten Kontakt mit dem Gegner vergeben wird und der Bronze Star nicht zur Anwendung kommen kann.

Alle Teilstreitkräfte haben ihre eigene Commendation Medal, die Joint Service Commendation Medal ist für den gemeinsamen militärischen Dienst vorgesehen und wird vom Verteidigungsministerium der Vereinigten Staaten vergeben.

Erstmals wurden die Commendation Medals von der United States Navy und der United States Coast Guard 1943 als Service Ribbon vergeben, erst ab 1960 als vollwertige Medaillen. Am 25. Juni 1963 wurde als letzte Medaille dieser Art die Commendation Medal die Joint Service Commendation Medal geschaffen.

Mehrfachauszeichnungen werden bei der Joint Service Commendation Medal mit bronzenem oder silbernem Eichenlaub dargestellt, unabhängig von der Teilstreitkraft.

In der Order of Precedence rangieren die Commendation Medals unter der Aerial Achievement Medal und über den Achievement Medals.
