About the author: Ugo Mulas (Italian, 1928–1973) was a significant 20th-century photographer, especially known for his street photography and portraits of artists. Born in Pozzolengo, Italy, he originally studied law in Milan before changing his focus to art and photography. Mostly self-taught, Mulas began by photographing the outskirts of the city and his friends during nights out. His style was off-the-cuff and casual, which would remain a hallmark of his work.

In 1954, he received his first professional commission to document the Venice Biennale. There, he met and befriended numerous American artists. He went on to travel and document the New York Pop Art scene of the 1960s, photographing important figures such as Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, and Barnett Newman. These and other portraits became some of his most popular works, and were collected in his book, New York: The New Art Scene, published in 1967. He would also continue to photograph every Venice Biennale through 1972, which he also complied into a book.

In addition to his ongoing work documenting the international art world, Mulas completed numerous commercial assignments for Italian publications and clients, such as automotive company Pirelli and the manufacturer Olivetti. His work has been the subject of exhibitions worldwide, notably including a major retrospective at the Fondation Cartier-Bresson in Paris titled Ugo Mulas: La Photographie that opened January 15, 2016. His wife Vera Lehndorff, whom he married in 1958, would go on to become a successful actress and artist in her own right. He remained actively working and photographing until the end of his life, despite growing health problems. He died in Milan on March 2, 1973.
