Niek van der Plas (1954) groeide op in Katwijk aan Zee, als oudste zoon in een gezin van vier kinderen. Het vissersdorp waar de oude, witte kerk, de zee en de duinen een prominente plaats innemen, vindt men terug op veel van zijn schilderijen. Niek begon al op jonge leeftijd met tekenen, gestimuleerd door zijn vader. In 1966 werd hij voorgedragen als student aan de Famous Artist School in de Verenigde Staten. Van der Plas is een colorist. Bij voorkeur werkt hij met warme kleuren. Zijn werk krijgt daardoor een Franse sfeer. De schilderijen worden gewaardeerd door een breed publiek in binnen- en buitenland. In de premiere van de Theaterproduktie van Joop van den Ende “Aspects of Love” is het schilderij Canal Grande Venetië van Niek van der Plas gekozen voor het decor, naast schilderijen van onder meer Vincent van Gogh en Maximilien Luce.
