 The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Torre Pendente di Pisa) took almost 200 years to complete, with the tower standing next to Pisa Cathedral for more than 600 years.  Thanks to its famous deviation, it has become one of the world's most famous architectural monuments.  The story of this bell tower hides more than 800 years of European history and is a fascinating example of the wonders of medieval engineering.  Although the Leaning Tower of Pisa came mainly due to its proverbial deviation from the vertical, even without it it would rank among the most remarkable architectural creations.  It was exhibited at a time when little construction of this type took place in Europe, and the thoughtful application of columns and arches is a proof of deep knowledge of the laws of weight and its distribution, and is far ahead of its time.  However, its architect did not take enough into account the clay subsoil and the need to establish foundations capable of supporting the body of the tower with the bell tower, which as a whole should eventually weigh 14,500 tons).  The eight-storey tower is built of limestone on lime mortar and is lined with marble around the outer perimeter.  The interesting thing is that it is probably due to the limestone that the tower did not burst and collapse - this stone is flexible enough to be able to balance the pressures caused by deflection.  The ground floor of the tower consists of an arcade of 15 blind arches.  Each of the other floors has 30 arches, except for the last with a bell tower chamber, which has 16 arches.
