Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) was a prominent French writer, poet, playwright, artist and filmmaker. He is regarded as one of the most significant cultural personalities of the 20th century in France. Cocteau was a versatile artist and was active in Dadaism and Surrealism. He explored various art forms, including film, in which his works such as “Le Sang d'un Poète” (1930) became influential.

During the interwar period, he played a central role in the artistic and cultural life of France. His versatility extended from literature, with works such as the well-known novel “Les enfants terribles” (1929), to film, where “Orphée” (1950) became a success and an important influence for director Ingmar Bergman.

As an artist, Cocteau collaborated with other prominent figures such as Erik Satie, Pablo Picasso and the Russian Ballet. He also had a significant impact as an essayist, with works such as “Le coq et l'arlequin” (1918). Cocteau's paintings and drawings are often characterized by a poetic and symbolic style. He made use of lines and forms to create abstract and dream-like compositions. Many of his works also incorporate symbols and figures that recur in his literary and cinematic creations.
