James Rizzi (1950-2011) - I'm in a New York State of Mind · with unique drawing

James Rizzi (5 October 1950 - 25 December 2011) -was an American pop artist who was born and raised in Brooklyn,New York. Rizzi graduated from the University of Florida in Gainesville,Florida. He came up with the idea of 3D multiples, which today are mainly associated with his name, when he had to submit grades for all three subjects after taking courses in painting, printmaking and sculpture, but only had time for one. So he made an etching, printed it twice, coloured it by hand and mounted parts of one print over the other, using wire to add depth. As he received good marks from all three teachers, he stuck with this idea and developed it further. Rizzi became most famous for his 3D artworks, ‘especially the large, elaborate prints and the teeming anthropomorphic cityscapes. His cheerful maximalism and his delight in crazy details and elaborate trivia created a genuine art brand, a trademark more recognised than any other in the world.’ He only returned to painting late in life. In his ‘last paintings, he combines his Picasso and Hanna-Barbera drawing style with an increasingly chromatic palette and a complex graphic structure that is simultaneously reminiscent of Cubism and the most refined Indian friezes’. ★★★ James Rizzi's ‘I'm in a New York State of Mind’ (UNIQUE UNESCO VERSION) -is a 3D artwork from 2004 that reflects his characteristically vibrant and whimsical depiction of New York City. The work was produced in a limited edition of 175 copies, which are signed and numbered by the artist. The artwork showcases Rizzi's distinctive style with vibrant cityscapes full of bustling buildings and cheerful characters that capture the dynamic spirit of New York.
