Ring with Roman Lapis Lazuli amulet bead. The authentic Roman bead is set on a modern gold-plated ring and is partly free to rotate (swivel-type).

Outside diameter: ± 21,6 mm
Inside diameter: ± 17,8 x 18,5 mm
Amulet bead: ± 9,8 mm

Condition: good condition and wearable. The ancient bead is restrung and combined with modern gold-plated spacer beads and fittings. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images.

All authentic ancient beads are slightly different in shape or colour shade and show different signs of wear or iridescence. This adds to the charm of each piece and makes every composition unique.

LAPIS LAZULI
Lapis Lazuli was a rare commodity and highly valued in Roman society.

Its rarity and rich blue colour made it a symbol of wealth, luxury, nobility, and high social status. It was believed that its intense blue colour linked it to the heavens, offering divine favour and protection. 

Lapis was often used in amulets to ward off the 'evil eye' or other negative influences. Amulets made from Lapis Lazuli could be worn to invoke Jupiter’s favour, protection, and wisdom, as he was a god of divine authority and justice.

Ground Lapis Lazuli was used for decorative and cosmetic purposes, but it was also believed to have medicinal properties. Roman physicians sometimes recommended it for various ailments, such as improving eyesight, reducing headaches, or for soothing the soul.

In ancient Greece and Rome, Lapis Lazuli was linked to Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. 

Lapis Lazuli was also strongly associated with Jupiter. It was part of his name (Iuppiter Lapis) and one of his sacred emblems. When treaties were being made, sacred items from Jupiter's temple—his scepter, a Lapis Lazuli stone, and grass from the temple's grounds—were used to swear oaths. This practice gave rise to the phrase "per Jovem Lapidem jurare," meaning "to swear by Jupiter's stone."

In Roman tradition, oaths were sworn on the Iuppiter Lapis (Jupiter Stone), housed in the Temple of Jupiter. This stone symbolized Jupiter's role as the divine lawmaker and protector of order. It was especially significant during ceremonies, such as taking oaths of office, to emphasize the seriousness and sacred nature of the promises made.
