De 50 Belgische ECU (European Currency Unit) is een gouden beleggingsmunt geslagen in 21,6 karaatsgoud met een zuivere goudinhoud van exact een halve ounce, namelijk 15,55 gram. De ECU werd voor het eerst uitgegeven bij het ontstaan van de Europese Monetaire Unie waardoor hij niet enkel bij beleggers maar ook numismaten zeer geliefd is.
 
Gouden 50 Belgische ECU

Eind jaren 70 werd het idee geopperd door de landen van de toenmalige Europese Gemeenschap om een éénheidsmunt te creëren. Zodoende werd op 13 maart 1979 de ‘European Currency Unit’ - kortweg ‘ECU’ - geïntroduceerd als voorloper van de euro. De ECU was een ‘korfmunt’ waarin de verschillende munteenheden van de toenmalige Europese lidstaten werden samengevoegd en waarbij de economische sterkte van elke staat het aandeel van haar munt binnenin de nieuwe eenheidsmunt bepaalde.
 
De oorspronkelijke samenstelling van de ECU in 1979 bestond uit de Duitse mark, de Franse frank, de Britse pond, de Italiaanse lire, de Nederlandse gulden, de Belgische frank, de Deense kroon, de Ierse pond en de Luxemburgse frank. In 1984 werd de Griekse drachme mee opgenomen in de ECU en in 1989 traden de Spaanse peseta en de Portugese escudo eveneens toe. Uiteindelijk verving de euro op 1 januari 1999 de ECU, waarbij 1 euro ongeveer 1 ECU aan waarde had.
 
Hoewel de ECU nooit een wettig betaalmiddel geweest is - dat in tegenstelling tot de euro met echte bankbiljetten en munten - zijn er tussen 1987 en 1999 in vele landen, waaronder België, munten (eigenlijk penningen) geslagen die de naam ‘ECU’ dragen als herdenking van deze eerste stappen naar een Monetaire Unie in Europa.
 
Zuiverheid & gewicht

Van de Belgische gouden ECU zijn twee varianten geslagen. De gouden 50 Belgische ECU geslagen tussen 1987 en 1988 heeft een zuiverheid van 900/1.000 (21,6 karaat), weegt bruto 17,28 gram en heeft een nettogewicht van 15,55 gram, oftewel een halve troy ounce. Vanaf 1989 werd de Belgische gouden ECU geslagen met een zuiverheid van 999,9/1000 (24 karaat) en woog hij zowel bruto als netto 15,55 gram, een halve troy ounce. Beide variaties bevatten dus wel evenveel zuiver goud.
 
Ontwerp van de gouden 50 Belgische ECU

De Belgische 50 ECU kent verschillende ontwerpen naargelang het jaar van uitgifte. Bij Argentor kan u voornamelijk voor de 50 Belgische ECU van 1987 terecht. Daarop ziet u op de voorzijde een afbeelding van Keizer Karel V kijkend naar rechts. De landen waarover hij regeerde in de 16e eeuw na Christus vormden samen het grootste Europese rijk sinds dat van Karel de Grote. Rondom zijn portret staat in het Latijns ‘CAROLVS. D. G. ROM. IMP. HISP. REX. DVX. BVRG. C. F.’ wat ‘Karel, bij de gratie gods, Rooms keizer, koning van Spanje, hertog van Bourgondië en Brabant en graaf van Vlaanderen’ betekent.
 
Op de keerzijde wordt de ‘nominale waarde’ - 50 ECU - van de munt afgebeeld samen met het jaar van uitgifte. De 12 sterren daarrond staan symbool voor de 12 stichtende landen van de Europese Monetaire Unie. Tenslotte vindt u het land van herkomst van de munt in de drie landstalen - Nederlands, Frans en Duits - terug; respectievelijk België, Belgique en Belgien.
