Diese Publikation präsentiert erstmals einen Überblick über das Gesamtwerk des belgischen Künstlers Michaël Borremans (*1963 in Geraardsbergen), der in den letzten Jahren mit seinen Gemälden weltweite Berühmtheit erlangte. Oft wirken seine in altmeisterlicher Technik gemalten Arbeiten wie aus früheren Jahrhunderten. Dieser Eindruck wird durch die Auswahl der Motive verstärkt, die Borremans historischen Printmedien entnimmt. Die Figuren seiner Arbeiten wirken meist isoliert und sind mit rätselhaften Tätigkeiten beschäftigt. Verdrängte Fantasien, Angst, Macht und Machtverlust sind immer wiederkehrende Themen in Borremans' Bildern. Wie in den Gemälden und Zeichnungen schafft er auch in seinen Filmarbeiten eine Atmosphäre des Rätselhaften und Bedrohlichen. Sehr lange verweilt die Kamera bei einer Situation und jede kleine Geste oder Bewegung der Protagonisten scheint eine undurchdringliche Bedeutung zu bekommen.
