"It is one of the most beautiful Mercedes ever designed, but not only that: it is one of the most beautiful cars ever designed" (Bruno Sacco, former head designer at Mercedes-Benz). The Mercedes-Benz W111 "Heckflosse": it owes its nickname to the then extravagant fins on the rear that were often found on American cars. In Mercedes' view, these fins had a functional function in addition to an optical one: they serve as corner markers that should make reversing into a parking space easier. With the new 6-cylinder engine and a then special degree of safety and luxury, it was in fact the first S-Class from Mercedes. The example offered by us was delivered new in France on June 21, 1965. In the year 2000, the Mercedes was registered on a Dutch license plate, after which it was partly restored and repainted. A photo report of this is available. Subsequently, it was owned by the last owner for almost 25 years: a Mercedes enthusiast with several classic Mercedes in his possession who has maintained the car with care, stored it dry in a garage and used it with passion for rides. The car is also known to the 'Heckflosse register'. In 2006, the 6-cylinder injection engine was overhauled. In 2025, the battery was replaced. The car has also been professionally tectyled. Furthermore, many maintenance invoices are available from authorized Mercedes dealers. The color combination is special and beautiful: the original color "Light Ivory" (color code 670) with a beautiful green interior. Both the paintwork and the interior are in very good condition. The Light Ivory color is reflected in the elegant wheels, which are equipped with good Michelin tires. Also the engine compartment and the very spacious trunk. The many chrome parts are in beautiful condition. A stainless steel exhaust has been mounted. Inside the car you will imagine yourself in ultimate class and stateliness with extremely comfortable seats. Beautifully finished with woodwork, a clock, the original Becker Monte Carlo TR radio and an impressively large steering wheel. Driving is also absolutely no punishment: the 2,195 cc 6-cylinder injection engine with 118 hp is smooth and refined and is coupled to a manual 4-speed gearbox on the steering wheel. In short: "Das Beste oder Nichts", a beautiful example of this top-class car, which is both optically and technically in very good condition.
General information about the Mercedes-Benz W111
A Mercedes designer is not easily distracted by fashion, but in the late fifties this was different. The Mercedes that listened to the code W111 (a design by Karl Wilfert) made its entrance and winked at the eccentric Americans of that time. It did get considerably smaller fins than its American contemporaries, but it did get its nickname from it: "Heckflosse". The model was introduced in 1959 as the successor to the 220 Ponton under the motto: "The new six-cylinder - a class of its own". With a high degree of attention to safety and luxury, the first S-Class was in fact born and the model was the top model of the German company in one fell swoop. It was equipped with a real safety body with crumple zones and also a chassis that could absorb a frontal impact well because it was given a crumple zone at the front and rear. The theme of ‘safety’ was also carried through in the interior with a so-called safety steering wheel, the column of which you could not pierce like a spear. A range of models was available, of which the 95 hp 220b was the entry-level model. The model we are offering is the 220Sb with 118 hp. Until the arrival of the 600 series, the W111 was the most luxurious car that Mercedes delivered.
