Athanasius Kircher (1602 – 1680) was a German Jesuit scholar and polymath who published around 40 major works of comparative religion, geology, and medicine. Kircher took a modern approach to the study of diseases as early as 1646 by using a microscope to investigate the blood of plague victims. In a universe conceived
as a vast system of correspondences, in particular between our world and God’s will, the signatures are the visible marks of the purpose of divine creation. In therapeutic practices they indicate the virtues of plants by their resemblance to specific organs they are supposed to be able to cure.
Ars Magna was also the first description published in Europe of the illumination and projection of images.
