8vo (22x15 cm);  xviii, 479pps, 32 pages. Illustrations/plates complete as per list of plates, including 1 folding frontis of The Gorilla and 1 large folding map of Equatorial Africa. Rebound with original pictorial front board, leather spine with gilt title and decoration.

Condition good minus. Plates and illustrations complete. Pages and plates with spotting throughout. Repaired tears to folding map and some edge damage due to misfolding. Some wear to cloth front board.

Paul Belloni du Chaillu was a French-American traveler and anthropologist. He became famous in the 1860s as the first modern outsider to confirm the existence of the gorilla ("some hellish dream creature") and the Pygmy people of central Africa. The gorilla's resemblance to humans astonished the public and scientific community and the timing corresponded fortuitously with Darwin's publication of "On the Origin of Species" later that year. Explorations & Adventures in Equatorial Africa recounts Du Chaillu’s extensive journeys through Central Africa between 1856 and 1859. He ventured deep into regions of present-day Gabon and surrounding areas, documenting his encounters with local tribes, wildlife, and the dense equatorial forests. The book is notable for its detailed descriptions of the indigenous peoples, their customs, and rituals, as well as its pioneering observations of African wildlife, including his reports on gorillas. Though well-received in its time, the book also faced skepticism, with some critics questioning the accuracy of Du Chaillu’s claims.
