【Product details】

This Edo period iron round tsuba (sword guard) features an elegant openwork (sukashi) design depicting a crane. In Japanese culture, the crane is a revered symbol of longevity, peace, and good fortune. Often associated with wishes for a long life and happiness, cranes are also believed to embody loyalty and wisdom, making them a popular motif in traditional art and craftsmanship.

The area around the nakago-ana (tang hole) has been skillfully hammered to ensure a tighter fit when mounted on a sword, demonstrating the practical expertise of the period’s artisans.  

This tsuba shows signs of age, including minor wear and slight rust. The fabric inside the accompanying paulownia box has some stains and fraying at one spot. Both the box and its lid have a crack and stains. Please refer to the photos for a detailed assessment of the condition.
