A very rare Sao bronze finger ring, regarded as an amulet with protective qualities, serves as a talisman for the Sao people, believed to shield them from insanity. Consequently, it is worn continuously. The rider-talisman is affixed to a ring that the diviner wears during ritual practices. A horse, is a rare symbol of prestige in the Sahel region. The Sao, ancestors of the Kotoko, established their presence between the 12th and 14th centuries in a region that spans the borders of Chad, northern Cameroon, and Nigeria. They settled on elevated terrain, allowing them to defend against invaders. Following a series of assaults from neighboring Kanem and later incursions from eastern tribes, the Sao were compelled to abandon their homeland and relocate to northwestern Cameroon, where they intermingled with local populations and formed the ethnic group known as Kotoko. By the 12th century, the lost-wax casting technique was already commonly practiced by this African community, primarily producing prestigious items such as jewelry made from copper alloys. Today, the Kotoko still attribute a mythical origin to copper, endowing it with protective significance.
