Heilige Carolus Borromeus – gips – Frankrijk – einde 19e eeuw

Dit prachtige gipsen beeldje stelt Carolus Borromeus voor, de Milanese kardinaal en heilige die bekendstaat als beschermer tijdens de pestepidemie van de 16e eeuw. Hij is weergegeven in zijn liturgische gewaden, met de typische capello romano (kardinaalshoed) aan zijn voeten en blootsvoets als teken van nederigheid. In zijn handen houdt hij een kruis tegen de borst gedrukt, terwijl de strop om zijn hals verwijst naar boetedoening en zelfopoffering.

Het beeldje draagt onderaan een zegel van Raffl, hofleverancier van religieuze beelden in Parijs, en de signatuur van Auguste Verrebout, die in 1879 het atelier La Statue Réligieuse (64, rue Bonaparte, Parijs) overnam. Het stuk heeft door de tijd een mooi patina ontwikkeld, met sporen van ouderdom die bijdragen aan zijn authenticiteit.

Hoogte 25 cm, in authentieke staat met kleine chips en slijtage. Merk de subtiele breuklijn op rondom de hals.
