Reflects a period of significant transition in European ceramic production, marked by technological innovation, changing social structures, and expanding trade networks. During this late medieval to early modern phase, pottery evolved from primarily functional, locally produced wares to more decorative and widely traded goods. The widespread adoption of the potter’s wheel and the use of lead or tin glazes—especially in regions like England, Germany, Italy, and Spain—transformed the aesthetic and practical qualities of ceramics, making them more durable and visually appealing.

In Northern Europe, this period saw the rise of green-glazed wares, stonewares from the Rhineland (such as Siegburg and Westerwald), and slip-decorated earthenwares in England. Meanwhile, the Mediterranean produced vibrant tin-glazed majolica and faience, particularly in Italy, Spain, and later France. These wares often featured painted decoration, ranging from simple geometric patterns to complex figurative scenes and heraldic motifs. The influence of Renaissance art and the growth of merchant classes also encouraged the use of pottery as a medium for both personal display and civic identity.

By the 17th century, pottery had become increasingly commercialized and diversified, reflecting shifts in consumption and global contact. Imports of porcelain from China and the Middle East began to influence European tastes and inspired local imitations, such as Delftware in the Netherlands and English tin-glazed earthenware. Pottery from this period serves as a valuable archaeological resource, helping researchers understand trade routes, domestic life, and cultural exchange in a rapidly changing world. Its stratigraphic presence in urban and rural contexts alike makes it a key tool in dating archaeological layers and interpreting post-medieval material culture.
