Engraved title-page, other engravings. Large folio (34 x 23 cm), full red morocco, with a wide gilt dentelle border on sides, dentelle corner ornaments and dentelle panels. Pages gild. Corners bumped. [72] some splitting along the fold of the binding.  616, I-XCIX, [8], 1-27. Front fly leaf missing (blank). Contemporary ownership inscription Ex Libris Fr Jacquot, prioris Bouconville, 1694.
10 full page engravings. 6 half-page. Strong imprints.


This edition of "Missale Romanum"contains the texts and rubrics, including the music, for the celebration of the most common liturgy and Mass of the Catholic Church. This edition was that promulgated by
Pope Clement VIII and revised by Pope Urban VIII.

The infamous Cardinal Richelieu authorized this publication "Faict à Château-Thierry, le 6 jour de Novembre, 1637. As Chief Minister to King Louis XIII and a cardinal, Richelieu controlled printing permissions in France, including religious texts. Any important publication required royal privilege (permission), which was usually countersigned by Richelieu
