A multi-figured mythological scene set in an evening woodland landscape. On the left side of the composition, three nymphs of Diana sleep peacefully after a successful hunt, while two lustful satyrs secretly observe them. In the foreground, a large pack of hunting dogs dominates the scene, with the god of love, Cupid, attempting to control them. He gestures for silence by placing his finger to his lips.

Jan Brueghel the Elder and his son, Jan Brueghel the Younger, created this popular mythological subject of the sleeping huntress Diana and her nymphs in collaboration with Peter Paul Rubens or his workshop (and circle) in several versions and replicas. The original version—the so-called "Parisian Sleep"—is held in the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris. Painted around 1620/21, it was a collaboration between Jan Brueghel the Elder, Peter Paul Rubens, and Frans Snyders.

The present painting was created almost simultaneously and is directly related to this original, just before Jan Brueghel the Younger’s trip to Italy. While Jan Brueghel the Younger painted the expansive landscape, the lively dogs, and various other elements, the figures of the nymphs and satyrs were painted by an as-yet unidentified artist from Rubens’ circle. Dr. Klaus Ertz, a leading expert on Brueghel, describes this painting as being of "high quality" and, along with another work by Jan Brueghel the Younger, as "beautifully preserved, color-rich masterpieces."

The two upper nude figures on the left side of the work were added at a later time. There may be an underpainting beneath these figures that is still partially intact.

The monogram "JB" is found on the bracelet of the sleeping nymph by the tree. The verso has the stamp of the panel maker with the ligature monogram "GK" (likely Gerard van Kessel, 1588–1640).
