Zeldzame eerste druk van het invloedrijke pamflet La Noblesse commerçante, verschenen in 1756 bij Duchesne in Parijs (met fictieve aanduiding “À Londres”). Het werk is een uitgesproken verdediging van economische activiteit binnen de adelstand, een radicaal idee in het ancien régime.

Het boek opent met een fraaie gravure van een edelman aan de kade, symbool voor de kruising tussen adel en koopmanschap. De tekst bekritiseert het adellijk lediggangersideaal en roept op tot een actieve, productieve rol in handel en nijverheid — een vroegliberaal manifest dat zijn tijd ver vooruit was.

Kenmerken:

Eerste druk uit 1756, 218 pagina's. 

Vollederen band met gemarmerd oppervlak en rijk vergulde rug (bloemmotieven en titel: “NOBLES COMME”).

Mooie frontispice (gravure) intact.

Ex libris “Baronis Surmont” op het schutblad — interessante adellijke provenance.

Binnenwerk compleet, met royale marges, zoals bedoeld bij eerste druk en fris van papier.

Conditie:

Goede staat. Lichte slijtage aan de hoeken en bovenste kap, rug intact. Gravure helder. Geen scheuren of ontbrekende bladen. Licht vlekje op het schutblad. Een verzorgd en verzamelwaardig exemplaar.

Een waardevol werk voor verzamelaars van Verlichting, politieke filosofie, economische geschiedenis en adelcultuur. 

De auteur van La Noblesse commerçante blijft onbekend, maar het werk is zeker geschreven door een goed geïnformeerd verlicht denker uit midden 18e-eeuws Parijs, met nauwe banden tot de opkomende handelsbourgeoisie. Het boek werd gepubliceerd onder strikte anonimiteit om censuur en vervolging te vermijden.
