A propos du photographe :

Thomas Hoepker est né à Munich en 1936. Il a étudié l'art, l'histoire et l'archéologie, mais sa véritable fascination était la photographie. Son grand-père lui a offert un vieil appareil photographique à plaques pour son quatorzième anniversaire, ce qui l'a incité à expérimenter la photographie. En 1960, avant d'avoir pu terminer ses études, il a été embauché par le magazine Münchner Illustrierte . Il a continué à travailler chez Kristall jusqu'en 1963, puis a rejoint le magazine Stern en 1964.

La même année, Hoepker est invité à rejoindre Magnum Photos, qui commence alors à distribuer ses photographies d'archives. En 1989, il devient membre à part entière. Il devient ensuite président de Magnum entre 2003 et 2006.

Hoepker et son ex-femme, Eva Windmöller, vivaient à Berlin-Est, où ils travaillaient comme premiers correspondants accrédités du Stern . En 1976, ils s’installèrent à New York, où Hoepker passa la plupart de son temps. En plus de travailler comme directeur artistique pour l’édition américaine de Geo , Hoepker travailla entre 1987 et 1989 au Stern de Hambourg.

Au fil des ans, Hoepker a exposé ses œuvres dans le monde entier. Il a également reçu plusieurs prix pour son travail photographique, télévisuel, cinématographique et documentaire. Dear Memories, son documentaire sorti en 2022 au cinéma, explore la vie et l'œuvre de Hoepker. La même année, il publie The Way It Was .

Pendant la pandémie de Covid-19, Hoepker et Christine Kruchen, sa troisième épouse, ont commencé à fouiller dans ses tout premiers fichiers négatifs de films en noir et blanc et à numériser ce qu'ils y trouvaient. L'une de leurs découvertes était une série de 10 000 négatifs montrant une étude photographique de la vie en Italie à la fin des années 1950 — ses toutes premières images en tant que photographe. Italia, une sélection de ces images a été publiée en 2023 par Buchkunst Berlin.

Thomas Hoepker est décédé le 10 juillet 2024 à Santiago du Chili. Il avait 88 ans.
