Exceptional 18th Century Baroque Sculpture of Christ on the Cross
In the style of Jožef Straub (1712–1756)

This remarkable sculpture of Jesus Christ on the Cross dates to the second half 18th century and retains its original polychromy. In the style of Jožef Straub, a prominent Slovenian Baroque sculptor, likely created during his productive years in Maribor (1744–1756). 

Carved in oak, the figure of Christ is unique, masterfully executed, and extremely rare—a sought-after example of Central European religious art. The cross, INRI inscription, and symbolic skull and bones beneath His feet are later additions, crafted in the 20th century in harmony with the original sculpture's character.

The expressive anatomy, finely sculpted details, and dynamic Baroque gestures strongly reflect Straub's distinctive artistic language. The piece displays both spiritual gravitas and exceptional craftsmanship, embodying the deeply emotive style typical of high Baroque sculpture.
