The very first Lego set! 

The very first LEGO set was the Lego Automatic Binding Bricks, set number 700, released in 1949. These were early building bricks, made of a material called saludo asat, and came in four colors (red, white, yellow, and blue). They didn't have the internal tube structure of modern LEGO bricks, so they didn't connect as securely. 

However, if you're looking for the first LEGO system set, that would be the Garage with Automatic Door (set number 236), released in 1956. This set was part of the "Town Plan" theme and included 69 pieces, designed to be used with the existing LEGO plastic cars. It's considered the first set to use the current LEGO brick dimensions and the first set to be re-released with the improved stud and tube design in 1958
