Koshoku Painting” is a collection of Araki's work published in 2008 by Rat Hole Gallery, which exhibits and publishes the work of quality photographers in Japan and abroad, including Nobuyoshi Araki, Takuma Nakahira, Daido Moriyama, and Seiryu Inoue. Published in conjunction with the exhibition, this book consists mainly of bondage photography, which is known as Araki's representative style, and also of works in which he has colored (painted) the prints himself. Araki's earlier work, “Nyushiru Kitan”, uses the same method of altering bondage photographs, and the technique of processing works (prints and films) is also familiar in Araki's work. In this book, in addition to bondage photos, Ku photos are also included. This is also a recurring motif in Araki's photographs, but the coloring (and the kanji character for “sky”) seems to emphasize the emotion of this motif. The dynamic brush strokes add a new dimension to the photographic technique of reproduction.
