Original early-20th-century landscape by the listed Scandinavian‑German painter Axel Meyer (born 1887, active 1910‑1950s). The small plein‑air study captures a sunlit clearing framed by slender birch and fir trees.

• Medium: Oil on canvas laid on thin card (artist‑prepared panel)

• Date: Dated 1916 lower left (partly hidden by frame)

• Signature: Lower right “A. Meyer” in brown

• Panel size: 22.6 cm × 30.7 cm (8.9 × 12.1 in)

• With frame: 37 cm × 45 cm × 2,3 cm – original stucco profile in warm gold, minimal corner wear

• Very good overall: stable paint layer, fine craquelure mainly in sky; a handful of pinpoint surface specks (age‑related fly‑spots/dust) along lower right edge, visible only on close inspection—no paint loss. Ready to hang.

• Provenance: Northern German private collection accompanied by a printed invoice as proof of ownership.

It is a charming impressionist vignette with lively brushwork and lyrical color harmony.

Originale Landschaft des denkmalgeschützten skandinavisch-deutschen Malers Axel Meyer (geb. 1887, tätig 1910–1950er Jahre) aus dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert. Die kleine Plein-Air-Studie zeigt eine sonnenbeschienene Lichtung, eingerahmt von schlanken Birken und Tannen.

• Medium: Öl auf Leinwand auf dünnem Karton (vom Künstler vorbereitete Platte)

• Datierung: Unten links 1916 (teilweise durch Rahmen verdeckt)

• Signatur: Unten rechts „A. Meyer“ in Braun

• Größe: 26,6 cm breit, 17 cm hoch

• Mit Rahmen: 30,6 cm breit, 23,5 cm hoch 2,3 cm tief – originales Stuckprofil in warmem Gold, minimale Eckbeschädigungen

• Insgesamt sehr guter Zustand: stabile Farbschicht, feines Craquelé, vor allem im Himmel; eine Handvoll punktförmiger Oberflächenflecken (altersbedingte Flugflecken/Staub) entlang der unteren rechten Kante, nur bei genauer Betrachtung sichtbar – kein Farbverlust. Fertig zum Aufhängen.

• Provenienz: Norddeutsche Privatsammlung mit gedruckter Rechnung als Eigentumsnachweis.

Es handelt sich um eine charmante impressionistische Vignette mit lebendiger Pinselführung und lyrischer Farbharmonie.


Artist information

Axel Meyer (*1887, vermutlich Kopenhagen; † nach 1950) war ein skandinavisch‑deutscher Landschaftsmaler der Spät‑Impressionisten. Er studierte um 1910 an der Königlich Dänischen Kunstakademie und zog später nach Norddeutschland, wo er Motive aus Moorlandschaft, Heide und Mischwald malte. Seine kleinformatigen Ölskizzen – oft auf Karton oder Holz – sind regelmäßig in Online‑Auktionen präsent. Meyers Werke zeichnen sich durch lebhafte Pinselstriche, natürliche Farbigkeit und eine stimmungsvolle Lichtführung aus.

Axel Meyer (*1887, presumably Copenhagen; † after 1950) was a Scandinavian-German landscape painter of the late Impressionist movement. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts around 1910 and later moved to northern Germany, where he painted motifs of moorland, heathland, and mixed forest. His small-format oil sketches—often on cardboard or wood—are regularly featured in online auctions. Vivid brushstrokes, natural color, and atmospheric lighting characterize Meyer's works.
