§ Large 4to (370x250); xxiiii, 202, [2] pp., signature: a-c1-4, A-Z1-4, Aa-Bb1-4, Cc1-2. 19 engraved plates, large engraved vignette on title page, engraved head- and tail-pieces. Contemporary half-calf, spine gilt. Several pages lightly waterstained, darker through the end. Good copy.
First published in Paris in 1651. Leonardo's writings on painting were never edited by the author himself into a coherent book; in the sixteenth century Francesco Melzi edited what was available in manuscripts and made copies of Leonardo’s drawing to be used as illustrations, but his compilation was never published. Further work after Melzi’s death, by Cardinal Barberini and his secretary Cassiano dal Pozzo, also did not result in a publication. Finally, Raphael Trichet du Fresne edited an abridge version of Melzi’s compilation, then circulating as manuscript, added a biography of Leonardo and a list of 35 works on art (“one of the earliest, if not the earliest, art bibliography”, according to Steinitz) and the result was the first printed edition (Paris, 1651). The story of the publication, however, is not as simple as that, and the 1651 edition (of which the present one is a later edition) was not based on just a manuscript (a thorough study on the subject is published by C. Farago). The plates of the present edition are by Girolamo Contoli, engraved by Giacomo Rosi, while the vignette, head- and tail-pieces are signed by Pio Panfili (1723-1812); “37. ... Steinitz 14; Verga 11; Guerrini 18. The volume is a reprint of Du Fresne's Italian edition of 1651 (No. 30). The illustrations repeat those of the 1733 edition (No. 34) except that the figures are grouped - two to eight per sheet - in plates designed by Girolamo Contoli da Imola and engraved with heightened tonal contrasts by Giacomo Rosi.” (University of Rochester). Leon Battista Alberti's “Della Statua” was also first published in 1651, and the work also includes Du Fresne’e biography of the artist.
