La prima slot machine, la "Liberty Bell", fu inventata da Charles Fey a San Francisco nel 1895. Queste prime macchine erano meccaniche e presentavano tre rulli con simboli come campane, ferri di cavallo e semi di carte. 
Il soprannome "One-Armed Bandit" (bandito con un braccio solo) deriva dalla leva laterale (il "braccio") che il giocatore azionava per far girare i rulli, e dalla tendenza di queste macchine a "svuotare" le tasche dei giocatori, agendo come un "bandito". 
Nel corso del XX secolo, le slot machine si sono evolute, passando da meccanismi puramente meccanici a sistemi elettromeccanici e, successivamente, a quelli completamente elettronici e digitali che troviamo oggi nei casinò e online. 
Funzionamento della riproduzione:
La versione mostrata nell'immagine riproduce il meccanismo base: si inserisce una moneta, si tira la leva e i rulli girano. Se i simboli si allineano in una combinazione vincente (ad esempio, tre "BAR" o il "JACKPOT"), la macchina "eroga" le monete precedentemente inserite, fungendo da salvadanaio.
