- Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898–1972) was a Dutch graphic artist renowned for his mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints that explore impossible constructions, infinity, and optical illusions. Though he had no formal training in mathematics, Escher developed a unique visual language that fascinated scientists, artists, and philosophers alike. His works blur the line between art and science, evoking a world where geometry, architecture, and imagination collide.

Escher’s fascination with symmetry, tessellations, and the interplay of space and perspective led to iconic pieces such as Relativity, Ascending and Descending, and Hand with Reflecting Sphere. His images are instantly recognizable and continue to captivate viewers with their precision and paradoxical nature.

One of his visually striking works is Gravity (1952). In this piece, Escher depicts a polyhedral star specifically, a nonconvex polyhedron whose faces house strange, colorful creatures with clawed limbs, each emerging from trapezoidal windows. The creatures, rendered in different colors (purple, green, yellow, red, orange), radiate from the structure as if governed by the gravitational center of the form. Gravity merges Escher’s interests in symmetry, space-filling, and biological surrealism, offering a sense of dynamic movement and spatial play.

Escher’s legacy endures not only through exhibitions and publications but also through the lasting visual and conceptual impact of his work. He remains one of the few artists whose creations continue to bridge disciplines, generations, and cultures.
