Ambrogio Calepino (1435–1510), un moine augustin et érudit italien, publia en 1502 un dictionnaire latin. Il l’enrichit progressivement : en 1509 avec l’hébreu, le grec et l’italien, puis par la suite jusqu’à huit ou onze langues.

La version octolingue type, parue en 1620 à Genève chez Matthæi Berjon (révisée et augmentée par Jean Passerat), comporte latin, hébreu, grec, français, italien, allemand, espagnol et anglais 

C’est un véritable trésor polyglotte, avec des notes d'étymologie, des adages, des traductions, un onomasticon (noms propres), etc. .

L’ouvrage, souvent en deux volumes in‑folio, a été publié en divers lieux : Cologne, Lyon, Gênes, Leyde, Bâle, Genève entre fin XVIᵉ et début XVIIᵉ siècles.

Ambrogio Calepino (1435-1510), an Augustinian monk and Italian scholar, published a Latin dictionary in 1502. He gradually added Hebrew, Greek and Italian to it in 1509, and later expanded it to eight or eleven languages.

The standard octolingual version, published in 1620 in Geneva by Matthæi Berjon (revised and expanded by Jean Passerat), includes Latin, Hebrew, Greek, French, Italian, German, Spanish and English.

It's a veritable polyglot treasure trove, with notes on etymology, adages, translations, an onomasticon (proper names), etc. .

The work, often in two folio volumes, was published in various places: Cologne, Lyon, Genoa, Leiden, Basel, Geneva between the late XVIᵉ and early XVIIᵉ centuries.
