Description from the seller
Duhamel, Georges. The abandoned men.
Paris, Mercure de France. 1921. In-12. 312 pages. Half-chagrin binding with corner tips, with a spine divided into five raised bands decorated with double gold fillets, the author's name, title, and date at the tail. Gilt at the head. Cover preserved.
Original edition on pure cotton watermark paper from Lafuma papermakers, numbered 917/2012, with the cover preserved. The binding is in very good condition except for a small epidermis on the top corner (see photo).
This work is a collection of stories, one of which, titled 'New Encounter of Salavin,' reintroduces the character of Louis Salavin from 'Confession of Midnight' (1920), which ultimately led Georges Duhamel to create his first literary cycle, 'The Life and Adventures of Salavin,' to which four other novels published between 1924 and 1932 will be added.
Georges Duhamel became famous through his writing of Civilisation (Goncourt Prize 1918) and then the Chronique des Pasquier. He was elected in 1935 as a member of the Académie française, where he served as perpetual secretary from 1944 to 1946. He then became a very active president for the renewal of the Alliance française after the war.
Charming collection of stories in original numbered edition and attractively bound.
