Deze antieke tegel dateert uit omstreeks 1640 en is vervaardigd in de Friese stad Harlingen. 

In de 17e eeuw was kaatsen een populaire sport, vooral in Friesland, maar ook elders in Nederland. Het was een tijd van bloei voor de Republiek, ook wel de Gouden Eeuw genoemd, en kaatsen paste goed in die periode. Hoewel de wortels van het kaatsen in de 12e eeuw in Frankrijk liggen, ontwikkelde het zich in de 17e eeuw in Nederland tot een sport met zijn eigen kenmerken. 
Hoewel de oorsprong in Frankrijk ligt, wordt het Friese kaatsen gezien als een sport met een lange traditie in Friesland

De bal wordt met de handpalm geslagen en het doel is om de bal zo te slaan dat de tegenstander hem niet kan terugslaan. Zoals afgebeeld op deze Friese tegel. 

De tegel is gerestaureerd.
