Fraai werk van de bekende Zeeuwse schilder Jan Frederik Schutz


De kunstschilder Jan Frederik Schütz werd in 1817 in Middelburg geboren in een familie van zeevarenden. Aanvankelijk zou hij ook zeeman worden, maar zijn hard lag bij de schilderkunst en vanwege zijn artistieke aspiraties werd hij in 1839 toegelaten tot de Middelburgse Teekenacademie, waar ook de bekende marineschilder Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek zijn opleiding gekregen.

Jan Frederik Schütz schilderde en tekende voornamelijk zee- en riviergezichten. Verder was hij ook werkzaam als leraar tekenen en schilderen. Hij gaf les aan o.a. A.A. Abrahams, G.H.G. von Brucken Fock, B.H. Stomps en aan zijn beide zoons, Willem Johannes Schutz en Jan Frederik Schutz jr.

Vooral in de omgeving van Zeeland had hij veel bewonderaars.

Werk van J.F. Schutz hangt in diverse Musea: o.a. het Haags Gemeentemuseum en het Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg.
