A Mumuye sculpture, Nigeria, collected in the Taraba State.

The Mumuye sculpture from Taraba State, northeastern Nigeria, represents one of the most striking and abstract artistic traditions in West Africa. Created by the Mumuye people, these wooden figures—known as iagalagana—were primarily used in ritual and protective contexts, often linked to ancestral veneration, healing, divination, and the regulation of social order. With their elongated limbs, arched torsos, and simplified, geometric features, Mumuye sculptures exhibit a formal tension and vertical energy that suggest inner vitality and spiritual presence rather than naturalistic representation. These figures were usually kept in family shrines or by members of secret societies, where they served as intermediaries between the human and spirit worlds.

The Mumuye, traditionally organized in small, non-centralized communities, placed significant importance on spiritual mediators such as elders, diviners, and ritual specialists, many of whom commissioned or guarded these sculptures. The abstract style—often with sharply bent arms, prominent abdominal forms, and expressive head shapes—is not decorative but functional, designed to concentrate spiritual force within the form. Though visually minimal, each sculpture carries powerful symbolic meaning related to protection, memory, fertility, or ancestral wisdom. As Eberhard Fischer wrote, “The Mumuye sculptor expresses energy not by action but by the tension of form—frozen motion rendered visible” (Fischer & Himmelheber, 1964).

Taraba State, where the Mumuye live, is part of Nigeria’s Middle Belt—a region known for its ethnic and linguistic diversity, rugged topography, and relative cultural autonomy. The hills and forests of the area allowed many traditional practices to endure, even during periods of external religious and political pressure. The Mumuye share cultural similarities with neighboring groups such as the Chamba and Jukun, but their art stands apart for its bold abstraction and ritual specificity. Despite increased outside influence in the 20th century, Mumuye sculpture continues to be recognized for its originality and its deep spiritual function within the community.
