This anklet, known as Kholkhal Menfoukh in Tunisia, is typical of those worn in the cities of Kairouan and Sfax. They are similar in size and design to the heavy solid silver anklets worn in the countryside, but these are hollow, and there is a closed rectangular box where the terminals of traditional penannular anklets would have been, showing that they were made for urban use. Menfoukh means inflated, hollow, or full of air.

The custom of wearing anklets, which was common throughout the Maghreb region, originated in North Africa, specifically in Ancient Egypt. These anklets originally were presented by Tunisian grooms to their brides as dowry. The bride was to wear her kholkhal anklets during her wedding — all 7 days and nights of it. And then, she wore it whenever she wanted, even in day-to-day life.
