The Sony Discman ESP D-231 is a portable CD player that was released in 1994. It's part of the Discman product line, which was a very popular series of portable CD players from Sony. The "ESP" in the name stands for "Electronic Shock Protection," a key feature that helped the player resist skipping.


Short History

The Discman line began with the D-50 in 1984, the world's first portable CD player. It was a groundbreaking device that brought the high-quality sound of CDs to a portable format, much like the Walkman did for cassette tapes. Throughout the late 80s and 90s, Sony continued to innovate and shrink the size of its portable CD players while also adding new features.

The D-231, released in the mid-90s, was a product of this evolution. By this time, portable CD players were becoming a common sight, and Sony was competing with other manufacturers. Features like Electronic Shock Protection (ESP) were crucial for making the players more practical for people on the go. ESP would buffer a certain amount of music, so if the player was bumped or moved, it could continue playing from its memory instead of skipping. The D-231 also included other standard features that were expected in portable CD players of the era, such as Mega Bass for enhanced low-frequency sound.
