La Lettera 22 nasce nel 1950,sostituendo la ICO MP1,
“Leggera come una sillaba, completa come una frase”, recita una delle pubblicità della Lettera 22, leggendaria macchina da scrivere portatile disegnata per Olivetti dall’architetto Marcello Nizzoli su progetto dell’ingegnere Giuseppe Beccio. A partire dal 1950, la macchina da scrivere leggera entra nelle case e negli uffici di lavoro, grazie al prezzo conveniente (42.000 lire, negli anni Cinquanta pari all'incirca a una mensilità di paga per un operaio) e alle originali campagne pubblicitarie. La Lettera 22 diviene, insieme a prodotti come la Vespa della Piaggio (uscita nel 1946) e alle Fiat 600 (1955) e 500 (1957), uno dei simboli dell'Italia che cambia e che si modernizza.
L’importanza della Lettera 22 è anche data dal fatto che è entrata nelle collezioni permanenti del MoMA - Museum of Modern Art di New York e premiata con il Compasso d'Oro nel 1954. La Lettera 22 è stata inoltre scelta (1959) dall'Illinois Technology Institute come il miglior prodotto in termini di design degli ultimi 100 anni.
