 This is a beautiful chawan (tea bowl) crafted by Fumitaka Sugiura of Usagitsukigama kiln, titled “Island” (御題茶碗「島」). The piece showcases a striking contrast between deep black glaze and vibrant blue accents, evoking the imagery of distant islands against a dark sea or night sky. The delicate white lines resembling mountain or island silhouettes further enhance its serene, contemplative aesthetic. The bowl comes in its original tomobako (signed wooden box), affirming its authenticity and craftsmanship.

 Fumitaka Sugiura (杉浦文泰)
 A distinguished Japanese ceramic artist associated with Usagitsukigama (兎月窯), Fumitaka Sugiura is known for creating tea bowls and ceramic works that blend traditional Japanese aesthetics with a contemporary sensibility. His pieces often feature dynamic glazes and thoughtful motifs, embodying both elegance and a deep connection to nature and Japanese culture.

Sugiura Fumiyasu is a ceramic artist from Aichi Prefecture.
His father, also a ceramic artist, is Yoshiki Sugiura, a talented artist from Seto (Aichi) who has been selected for exhibitions such as the Bunten and Nitten exhibitions several times, and has won various other awards.
In the world of ceramics, there are tea bowls called "Godai Chawan," which are created based on the theme of waka poems that are presented at the annual Imperial Poetry Reading Ceremony, the Hajime Poetry Reading Ceremony. Sugiura Fumiyasu also creates these tea bowls, which are highly collectible and highly regarded by ceramics fans.
