Candida Höfer is one of the most famous artists worldwide and former student of the legendary first Bernd (and Hilla) Becher class at the 'Kunstakademie Düsseldorf' (together with Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth and Axel Hütte).

'Weimar, which was already home to illustrious artists such as Cranach and Bach during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, finally became a place of pilgrimage for big names in the 18th century. Duchess Anna Amalia laid the foundations for the later legend with her famous library and high-calibre literary circles. Her son, Duke Carl August, then brought Herder, Goethe and Schiller to his court. With them, Weimar became the centre of German intellectual life, the "city of poets and thinkers". Candida Höfer had already photographed the Anna Amalia Library for her major library project in 2004. In the summer of 2006, she once again went in search of motifs in classical Weimar. Once again, the focus was on interiors with a great - and this time predominantly classicist - past: the Goethe National Museum, the Residential Palace and Belvedere Palace, the Wittum Palace, the theatres in Kochberg and Bad Lauchstädt, the German National Theatre.'

Published on her same-named exhibition at 'Neues Museum Weimar' in 2007 and 2008.

Bernhard 'Bernd' Becher (1931-2007), and Hilla Becher, born Wobeser (1934-2015), were German conceptual artists and photographers working as a collaborative duo. They are best known for their extensive series of photographic images, or typologies, of industrial buildings and structures, often organised in grids. As the founders of what has come to be known as the 'Becher school' or the "Düsseldorf School of Photography", they influenced generations of documentary photographers and artists in Germany and abroad. They were awarded the Erasmus Prize and the Hasselblad Award.

The Düsseldorf School of Photography refers to a group of photographers who studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in the mid 1970s under the influential photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher.
Known for their rigorous devotion to the 1920s German tradition of Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), the Bechers’ photographs were clear, black and white pictures of industrial archetypes (pitheads, water towers, coal bunkers).
Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Axel Hütte, Thomas Ruff and Thomas Struth modified the approach of their teachers by applying new technical possibilities and a personal and contemporary vision, while retaining the documentary method their tutors propounded.
