Geometric approach to Dürer’s Melencolia
Melencolia (Melancholy) is an engraving from 1514. It measures 24 by 18.8 centimeters. The engraving has frequently been the subject of art-historical discussion. It depicts a melancholic winged figure amidst a scattered, incoherent collection of objects, whose meaning is open to a variety of interpretations. Together with Knight, Death and the Devil (1513) and Saint Jerome in His Study (1514) this engraving is often grouped into a series known as the Meisterstiche.[2] Several prints of the engraving have been made, which are located in a number of museums, print cabinets, and private collections.
