Ikonta Story

Nobuyoshi Araki
Byakuya Shobo/1981/Japanese/215*268*10

Ikonta Monogatari” is a collection of photographs by Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan's leading photographers. Araki began photography under the influence of his father, a geta craftsman and amateur photographer in downtown Minowa, Taito-ku, Tokyo. This book is a collection of photographs he took with his father's Ikonta (a spring camera manufactured by Zeiss Ikon), which was a memento of his father. The book is composed of photographs taken between the fall of 1980 and February 1981, ranging from personal snapshots (including one of film director Seijun Suzuki!) to nudes of women. ), to nudes of women, the book is composed of fragments of Araki's daily life, laid out as they were on contact sheets. Akira Suei, who is also known as an editor, designed the book. This is not merely an ikontact of my photographic life from last fall to this February.　It is an ikontact story from the time when my father was photographing with an ikontakt” (from Araki's text ‘Dedicated to My Father,’ inscribed at the beginning of the book).
