Tales of Tono" is a photo essay by Daido Moriyama, one of Japan's leading photographers. Moriyama was also exposed to the world of Iwate-born poet Miyazawa Kenji, and Tono was a special place for him. Moriyama visited Tono for his first solo exhibition in the mid-1970s, and as if possessed, he clicked his shutter in this folk tale town, capturing the memories and lost landscapes that Japanese people had forgotten. The first edition of this book was published in 1976 after his solo exhibition at the Nikon Salon (a reprint edition was published in 2007). Beginning with color photographs, the book presents idyllic rural landscapes, landscapes, provincial townscapes, and traditional events, all captured in Moriyama's characteristic high-contrast black-and-white photographs.
