Michel Karis

Ivan Mestrović (1883-1962) is een gerenommeerd  kunstenaar aan het begin van de 20e eeuw en wordt beschouwd als de beroemdste in Kroatië. Hij was voornamelijk beeldhouwer, maar ook schilder, architect en schrijver. Hij was de eerste levende kunstenaar die in 1947 exposeerde in het Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York.

Gedurende zijn carrière heeft hij altijd contact gehad met andere grote kunstenaars uit die tijd. In Wenen deelt hij een atelier met Gustav Klimt en is hij een goede vriend van architect Otto Wagner.

Hij ontmoette de Franse beeldhouwer Rodin, die hij bewonderde en door wie hij aan het begin van zijn carrière werd geïnspireerd. De twee kunstenaars raken bevriend. Deze invloed van Rodin is terug te zien in Mestrović' eerste grote werk "De Levensbron". Het werk, aangekocht door de stad Zagreb, is nog steeds te zien voor het Nationaal Theater van de stad. Hij was eveneens architect en ontwierp verschillende gebouwen.

Tegenwoordig is zijn werk te bewonderen in de Mestrović Musea in Zagreb en Split, in openbare ruimtes in verschillende steden in Europa en ook in de Verenigde Staten. Hij is een tijdloze kunstenaar die met zijn werk altijd sterke emoties en boodschappen heeft weten over te brengen.
