Leo Setz

Jacob Albert Michael Jacobs (1812-1879) is een familielid van Beethoven en genoot zijn opleiding als kunstenaar aan de Academie van Antwerpen. Daar kreeg hij onder meer les van Ignace Van Bree en Ferdinand de Braeckeleer. 

Jacobs toonde zich vooral geinteresseerd in de romantische landschapschilderkunst. en werpt zich van langsom meer op als een pionier van de plein air schilderkunst. De Schelde en de Noordzee volstonden niet als horizon voor zijn verlangen om landschappen vast te leggen. Jacobs reisde de wereld af. Van Boulogne-sur-Mer tot Egypte.

Zo reisde hij in de jaren 1838-1839 de Nijl af waar hij talloze orientalistische taferelen schetste, ontwerpen die hij in de jaren nadien in vele schilderijen uitwerkte.

In 1855 reisde Jacob Jacobs naar het Noorden en legde daar het ruwe landschap en het bijzonder licht vast. 

Werken van Jacob Jacobs bevinden zich onder meer in de Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen en Brussel, maar ook in het Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam en in prominente Duitse musea in Berlijn en Munchen.
