This offset print by Jean Tinguely, one of the most influential figures of kinetic and conceptual art in the 20th century, captures the essence of his playful yet explorations of movement, machinery, and chaos. Published as part of the Press-Art portfolio in 1972/73,

The composition, rich with handwritten notations, arrows, and sketches, reflects Tinguely’s fascination with self-destructive machines, chance, and the tension between order and disorder. The sheet is inscribed in the image with “1973 EXPRESS-ART » CHAOS No 1 « in Columbus (INDIANA).”

Jean Tinguely is known for his kinetic sculptures and mechanical assemblages, often merging humour, absurdity, and critique of modern consumer culture. His work has been exhibited worldwide, including major retrospectives at Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museum Tinguely, Basel; and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York. He was closely associated with Nouveau Réalisme alongside artists such as Yves Klein, Arman, Daniel Spoerri, César, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Christo. His playful approach resonates with contemporaries like Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, and later conceptual and installation artists such as Nam June Paik and Bruce Nauman.
