Au sud-est du Nigeria, les sculptures africaines Igbo produites dans plusieurs régions, connues sous le nom d' alusi, ou agbara, sont ornées d'attributs aristocratiques plus ou moins élaborés. Elles incarnent un nombre considérable de divinités. Considérées comme la descendance de Chuku, ou Chukwu, ces statues constituent des intermédiaires auxquels des sacrifices tels que des noix de kola, de l'argent, du kaolin,sont octroyés dans le but de jouir de leurs faveurs.
Les sculpteurs s'avèrent être des hommes, mais les adeptes féminines contribuent bien souvent en parachevant l'oeuvre à l'aide de pigments colorés.
Coiffure et ornements tégumentaires indiquent en outre le rang social du personnage.
